A recent study of Local Authorities across the UK, has found that 81% of those surveyed believe the pothole crisis has gotten worse over the last 5 years – and this was not the only unsettling statistic National Pothole Day uncovered.
National Pothole Day has surveyed over 40 Local Authorities up and down the country to understand how a shortfall in funding, selection of materials and the support, or lack of, from Central Government has impacted on the country’s pothole crisis.
Seeing potholes on our daily commute has become commonplace. Road users are sick and tired of trying to dodge potholes to avoid causing costly damage to their vehicle or bicycle. It is easy to blame Local Authorities for the state of the country’s roads, but is that fair?
As part of their 2021 campaign, National Pothole Day surveyed over 40 Local Authorities to truly understand what changes they feel need to be made to make a real difference to the pothole crisis.
Worryingly, National Pothole Day found 57% of Local Authorities state that they have had their funding for pothole repairs cut over the last 5 years and that 55% do not believe Central Government fully understand the impact the funding gap has had on the pothole crisis.
The survey also uncovered that 23% of Local Authorities receive 51-100 pothole complaints every single month – a figure that has the potential to increase as the pothole crisis worsens.
Despite the additional funding for pothole repairs released last year, with statistics like these, it is clear that the pothole crisis isn’t going away any time soon. The question then emerges, how do Local Authorities make the best use of the additional funding to try to repair the country’s crumbling road network once and for all?
UltraCrete, proud sponsor of National Pothole Day, have been researching and manufacturing pothole repair materials for over 40 years.
