UltraCrete helps prevent potholes on Northamptonshire’s roads

Surface Defect Repair has been used to repair defects and cracks across Northamptonshire’s road network.

UltraCrete Surface Defect Repair has been used to repair a number of defects and cracks across Northamptonshire’s road network, helping to prevent dangerous potholes from forming.

After a long and harsh winter, Northamptonshire’s already vulnerable road network and deteriorated even further, causing Northamptonshire Highways to look for alternative and permanent highway maintenance solutions.

UltraCrete’s Area Sales Manager for the Midlands, Dave Youell, visited Kier’s Highways Department, the contractor chosen to complete the repairs, to carry out a demonstration of Surface Defect Repair – a product developed to address specific areas of preventative maintenance.

Following a successful demonstration, product training was carried out, which resulted in Northamptonshire Highways and Kier adopting and using this innovative repair system as part of their ongoing approach to maintain the road network.

Through consultation with contractors and clients, UltraCrete identified that early treatment of defects in carriageways of thin surface asphalt repairs, would prevent the formation of costly potholes and their associated risks.

As a result, UltraCrete’s team of in-house Development Chemists embarked on months of extensive product testing to present Surface Defect Repair to the market – a product that is applied to minor surface defects in footways and carriageways which then stops potholes from forming.

Durable and easy to use, Surface Defect Repair is a granular thermoplastic material with anti-skid dressing and is perfect for use on contracts where asset management allows for early identification of minor defects and can be built into the ongoing maintenance programme.

Surface Defect Repair has been used on Northamptonshire’s roads since November 2017. On adopting this innovative product, Stuart Mann Highways Depot Manager at Northamptonshire County Council, commented: “We are very pleased with the results and will continue to use Surface Defect Repair across the network.”
