Envirobed® CD534

Envirobed CD534 bedding mortar is an environmentally friendly alternative to resin-based materials, specially formulated for the bedding of all access covers.

A two-component system containing a blend of special cements, Envirobed is a high-strength mortar with innovative features. Its superior compressive, tensile and flexural strengths make it ideal for use in heavily trafficked / wheel track locations. It can be open to traffic after just 1 hour.

Envirobed CD534 (formerly known as HA104) holds several impressive specifications:

  • HAPAS-approved
  • Conforms to CD534.
  • Can be used in wet weather conditions and temperatures as low as 1°C
  • BT LN550 and LN320 compliant
  • 53N/mm2 compressive strength at 3 hours
  • 6.10N/mm2 tensile strength at 3 hours.

Envirobed CD534 is part of the HAPAS-approved Ironwork group, meaning this strong bedding mortar solution is usable as an ironwork installation system and meets all relevant requirements for bedding mortars of the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works.

Perfectly suitable for use in rain and cold weather conditions, the UltraCrete Envirobed ® CD534 is a two-component system, containing a blend of special cements, polymer-graded aggregates and recycled glass. The result is a high-strength mortar that can accommodate depths of 10-50mm, with greater depths achievable when layering.

With superior compressive, tensile and flexural strengths reached after just three hours, Envirobed® CD534 provides all the performance but none of the environmental hazards associated with traditional resinous materials, such as hazardous waste disposal.

Before using Envirobed CD534, you must make sure all surfaces are free from oil, grease, dust or any other visible contaminants. Remove all loose particles and work on a sound substrate.

Once suitable, pre-soak the area with clean water before application to aid the bond. Finally, remove the ponded water before applying the product.

Envirobed CD534 can either be mixed by a force action mixer or by drill and paddle, making it more accessible for a wide manner of jobs.

1. Mechanical, force action mixing:

Start by pouring the contents of the polymer liquid bottle into a wide-based mixing vessel, leaving a small amount in the bottle.

Next, add half the bag of UltraCrete Envirobed CD534 powder and mix with a slow-speed force action mixer (around 300-400rpm) until the powder is fully absorbed.

Finally, add a further quarter of the powder and mix, followed by the remaining powder for a total mixing time of 2 minutes.

2. Drill and paddle mixing:

When using a drill and paddle to mix UltraCrete Envirobed CD534, we recommend using a grout mixing paddle and a slow speed drill and paddle (around 300-400rpm), with a wide-based mixing vessel.

Mix the product for at least 3 minutes, being careful not to undermix or dilute the mixture with water or a part mix – this will cause the product’s performance to significantly reduce.

How you place Envirobed CD534 will depend on whether you are using a full bed or damming mortar. Below, we will guide you through the placing for both.

1. Full bed

To begin, apply the high-performance bedding material over a pre-soaked area. Once mixed (See above for mixing instructions), Envirobed CD534 should be applied to the supporting structure within 4 minutes.

Firm the product well into position using a float, allowing for a 5mm excess thickness. Next, place the frame onto the bedding mortar, ensuring the frame flange is fully supported. Check that the frame does not overhang the mortar at any point (use suitable lifting equipment when positioning the frame). Care must be taken to prevent voids in the bedding material under the frame.

The frame should then be tamped into place using a string line to ensure the correct level is obtained. Any holes within the frame should be in-filled and the flanges of the frame should be enveloped by a minimum thickness of 10mm with the bedding material.

Exposed surfaces of the bedding material should be float-finished, ensuring voids are filled. Remove loose materials and point the inside surface to a smooth finish. Once the bedding material has reached its initial set, the backfill material UltraCrete QC10/F or Envirobed Flowable can be placed.

2. Damming mortar

For damming mortar, place the mortar in the gap on the inside face of the frame and chamber top using a trowel or the heel of a gloved hand, taking care to leave no voids, to produce a ‘dam’ and a pointed smooth finish. Once a smooth finish is achieved, leave to stiffen.

To safely store Envirobed CD534, store the powder bag in its original packaging at temperatures between 5°C and 30°C. Avoid frost or sunlight and make sure the bag is unopened, clear of the ground and in cool, dry conditions protected from excessive drafts.

If stored in correct conditions, the product will be maintained if used within 8 months. When mixed with water, the product will contain no more than 0.0002% (2 ppm) soluble Chromium (VI) of the total dry weight of the cement.

When storing the liquid additive, extreme temperatures can damage the product. Therefore, store the product in temperatures between 5°C and 30°C. The liquid should not be exposed to excess heat, cold or frost during storage or when transported between sites.

Please note: using this product after the eight-month declared storage period may increase the risk of an allergic reaction. High temperatures and high humidity will lead to a reduced shelf life.

You must use appropriate PPE when preparing, mixing and applying Envirobed CD534. After use, wash your hands, especially before consuming food. Once used, keep the product out of the reach of children and animals.

Dispose of the packaging and waste responsibly, in accordance with your local authority requirements. For more information on disposal, consult the technical data sheet.
