Start learning

Before laying QC10, our high-strength rapid-set concrete, some concrete base preparation is required to provide proper performance. Ensure that all surfaces are free of oil, grease, dust, or any other visible contaminants. Remove any loose particles from the area and test the strength and soundness of your substrate before applying QC10 quick-set concrete.

Pre-soak the area of application with clean water before applying QC10 in order to aid bond strength, and remove any ponded or stagnant water before applying our quick-set concrete.

Before beginning work, ensure that your installation conforms to the RSTA Code of Practice for Ironwork Systems.

Mixing

QC10 is a rapid strength concrete that can be mixed by hand or mechanically. When mixing by hand, ensure that the mixing is vigorous.

Mix the inner bag containing the cement with the sand or aggregate you will be using. Add about one litre of water and mix thoroughly. If required, slowly add additional water until you reach the required consistency for your project.

It is essential that you do not over-water the product. If too much water is added to your mixture, your concrete will suffer from slower strength gain, reduced compressive strength and potentially shrinkage cracking.

The amount of water required will vary depending on the moisture content of your aggregate. In order to ensure the strength of your Ultracrete rapid strength concrete application, do not remix or add excessive water. Mix only enough material to apply within four minutes.

Placing

To install QC10 rapid strength concrete in conjunction with our HAPAS-approved UltraCrete Manhole Reinstatement System, follow the below steps:

  1. Apply your QC10 with a float 40mm below the required surface.
  2. Compact to ensure no voids are evident.
  3. Rough float the final surface to achieve a level surface.
  4. Once the material has reached an initial set, spray all vertical edges, including the ironwork, with UltraCrete SCJ.
  5. Ensure all vertical substrates are fully covered.

To install in conjunction with thick concrete repairs, haunching reinstatements and post, sign, fence and barrier erection:

  1. Apply material over the pre-soaked area within four minutes of mixing.
  2. Firm well into position by tamping or using a float.
  3. Clean any mixing equipment with water immediately after use.

Large County Council

For the last 18 months we have fully adopted a HAPAS approved reinstatement system for ironwork and we have had no failures at all. As a result of this, we have also now upgraded the County’s Code of Practice for Ironwork so that the use of HAPAS & CD534 materials are specified.
